Mimi Sobel's Obituary
Mimi Sobel (nee Rieger) age 89 of Beachwood, Ohio died peacefully on January 1, 2017. Loving wife of the late Dr. Marvin Sobel, mother of Jonathan (Linda) and Melissa; grandmother of Katherine Castaldo; loyal friend, teacher and role model to many. At a time when most women who could afford to do so stayed at home and enjoyed the fruits of their husbands' success, Mimi broke the mold, returning to school to obtain her master's degree. She then embarked on a successful career as a teacher in, and administrator of, special education programs in the Beachwood City School District. The culmination of her career was as a professor at John Carroll University where she taught a new generation of teachers to teach children with reading disabilities, earning the admiration of her students and a national reputation in her field. A lioness for liberal causes, she was politically and socially active throughout her life, and no doubt left us when she did to be spared the pain of events that she feared will transpire after January 20th. Her family will miss a loving mother, grandmother, and aunt: and all those who knew her will miss her intelligence, wit, loyalty, and fervor. A celebration of Mimi's life will be held Sunday, January 8, 2017 from 2:00 P.M. until 5:00 P.M. at the Four Seasons Apartments party room, Building 3, 26600 George Zeiger Drive, Beachwood, Ohio 44122. Donations in Mimi's honor can be made to Planned Parenthood of Greater Ohio or to The Cleveland Orchestra.
