Jean L. Elsner's Obituary
Jean L. Elsner (nee Leaf), a longtime Clevelander, died Monday, Dec. 10, six days after her 99th birthday. She is survived by sons, David (Michele Gaspar) of Chicago, Lawrenace (Benita Rubinette) and their daughter Sophie, all of Austin, Texas, and Michael (Peggy Hutchison) of Tucson, Arizona. Her husband of 59 years, Sidney, a longtime editor at The Plain Dealer, died in 2006. Mrs. Elsner was living in a seniors’ community in Lincolnwood, Ill., at the time of her death. A graduate of John Adams High School and Ohio University, she was a champion of education and a lifelong learner. In 2009, Cleveland State University awarded her its prestigious President’s Medal, noting she had taken more than 100 courses at CSU, more than anyone In school history, through Project 60, which allows Ohio residents over 60 to audit courses free of charge. During WWII, she briefly served with the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps. ALL SERVICES PRIVATE. NO VISITATION.
