Gerda Levine's Obituary
Gerda Levine, age 90 was the loving mother of Oren David Youngstein of Middleburg Heights and Deborah Anne Saas of Oxford, OH; grandmother of ten and great-grandmother of 5. Mrs. Levine worked with and was active on behalf of Jewish causes. She made numerous trips to Israel and her dispatches during the State's early years were published in the Cleveland Jewish News. In the course of her work she brought a then unknown violinist to Severance Hall for a concert to benefit Kfar Silver, an agricultural school for Israeli youth, named in honor of famed Rabbi Abba Hillel Silver. The artist was Yitzhak Perlman. Her focus changed later in life when she joined the staff at a community health center, where she worked until her retirement. In 2007 she was recognized as a Spotlight volunteer by United Way for her work as an ombudsman at Montefiore. She treasured close friendships, some of which lasted seventy years and longer. Mrs. Levine was born and had lived in Europe for many years, spending WWII in London. She came to Cleveland over 60 years ago, but continued to travel widely. She was a CWRU Senior Scholar, loved classical music and was an avid reader. She (and her cookies) will be sorely missed. Graveside service Friday, July 29, 2016 at 2:00 PM at Mount Sinai Cemetery, 6576 White Road (at S.O.M.) in Mayfield Village. Contributions in her memory to the Cleveland APL would be appreciated.
