Dorothy Silver's Obituary
Dorothy Silver, (nee Greenbaum) 92, passed away on July 17th, 2021. Born Detroit, MI on February 28th, 1929. Wife of the late Reuben; mother of Paul (Linda) of Pittsburgh, Daniel (Ann) of Broomfield (CO) and Joshua of Philadelphia; grandmother of Sarah (Marc), David, Jeremy (Mary) and Maria; great-grandmother of Ori; sister of the late Irene (Herman), the late Jack (Sariva), and the late Sy (Gerry).
Dorothy enjoyed a long rich life of family, theater, and more.
She met Reuben Silver at Detroit’s Wayne State University in 1948, thus beginning a partnership lasting over seven decades.
As a director and actor, she worked in many of the major theaters in Northern Ohio, including Karamu, Dobama, Cleveland Playhouse, Beck Center, Actors Summit, Great Lakes Theater, Ensemble Theater, Interplay Jewish Theatre and Cleveland State University, as well as directing Off-Broadway at the American Place Theater. As an actor, her film credits include Shawshank Redemption, The Promised Land, and Old-Fashioned.
She worked frequently as a partner with Reuben, often directing one another, as well as appearing on stage together in plays such as The Visit, Gin Game, and Death of A Salesman. They jointly created and narrated numerous educational and holiday concerts with The Cleveland Orchestra. Additionally, they performed dramatic readings of works in Yiddish and English throughout the United States, as well as in Russia and Israel.
From 1976-1989, Dorothy served as the Head of Performing and Visual Arts at the Cleveland Jewish Community Center.

A Zoom memorial service will be held on September 5th, 2021 from 3:00-4:00pm Eastern Time. For further details, check this website the week prior.
Dorothy had suggested that memorial donations be made to a Cleveland-area theater group of your choice.
