Irving Bayer
January 29, 1925 - July 5, 2017
Irving Bayer passed away on July 5, 2017 after an illness. He was 92. A longtime resident of Cleveland Heights, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife Deanne (Weiss) Bayer. He leaves behind his son Samuel Bayer and daughter-in-law Julia Sullivan of Cambridge, Massachusetts, his son Joshua Bayer and daughter-in-law Valerie Durrant of Rockville, Maryland, and grandson Alexander Samuel Durrant Bayer. He also leaves two nephews, one grand-nephew, several cousins, and many dear friends. Irv attended the Brooklyn, New York public schools, City College of New York, and Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute. He served in the United States Navy in both the Second World War and the Korean War. He was a member of Temple Israel Ner Tamid in Mayfield Heights, and of the Jewish Secular Community of Cleveland. He worked for many years as an engineer at Picker Medical Equipment, but his true vocation was in the field of stamp dealing and collecting, which he pursued as the head of DIB Enterprises until his death. Irv was an active participant in the Garfield-Perry Stamp Club and its annual stamp show. Irv loved all the arts, particularly music. He was a devoted supporter of The Music Settlement and of the Cleveland Chamber Music Society. He studied piano after his retirement, and practiced daily until his final illness. Irv could often be found at concerts in Severance Hall or attending openings at the Cleveland Museum of Art. A celebration of Irv’s life will be held later this summer.
